8. We are here to help - Fellow travelers in your quest to gain knowledge and combat skills of our ancestors. With a household you gain a support system to help guide you and answer your questions. Where can I find a certain piece of armor or how do I make an item? Together we can all achieve the goals that we want to get out of a historical group. If you are in the SCA you are in it for a reason. Is it to recreate medieval combat, educate the populace on life in the middle-ages, or just interact with fellow history buffs? Whatever your reason the household can be tailored to meet your needs!

If you live in Ft. Walton Beach, Niceville, or surrounding area you can become an active member within the Household of Gryphon's Keep. Whether you are a current member of the SCA or someone new to the world of re-enacting you can find a place in our household. Household of Gryphon's Keep and Order of the Black Gryphon - By-laws

1. The name of this organization is the Household of Gryphon's Keep, a household of the Society for Creative Anachronism (a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit organization). We are permanently located in the Kingdom of Meridies, Shire of Phoenix Glade (Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Niceville, Destin, and surrounding area).
2. The purpose of the Household of Gryphon's Keep is, like the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), the study and recreation of the European Middle Ages and Renaissance time periods, their crafts, sciences, arts, traditions, literature, etc.
3. Historical Era - the era reenacted by the Household of Gryphon's Keep is of 1200 to 1500 England, centered around Gryphon's Keep.
4. Authenticity - Members of the Household of Gryphon's Keep will make every effort to accurately recreate the clothing, armor, weapons, camp equipment, and arts and sciences of 1200-1500 England. Modern items, to include but not limited to coolers, tennis shoes, modern eyewear, flashlights, foam pads, etc., will not be present in the first person camp or display area during events. Small personal items may be kept hidden in fabric bags or wooden chests.
a. Modern eyewear will not be worn during events, or when the media is present. Corrective lenses may be worn only under a helm
b. Clothing, armor, and accoutrements will be made from natural materials and may be purchased ready made, hand sewn, or machine sewn (from approved merchants or patterns). All items should be documented using primary sources to the 1200 to 1500 era.
c. Livery - the livery of the Household of Gryphon's Keep shall be a tabard of muslin, with a blazon of a black griffin centered in front (Order of the Black Gryphon). Soldiers may wear a parti-colored tunic or liripipe of gold and black or muslin and black. Members who are not soldiers may wear a gold griffin on their garment sleeve indicating their allegiance. Personal crests can also be worn, though all members are encouraged to wear the household coat of arms when possible.
d. Blazon - the Blazon shall be a gold griffin on a half black and half red background (a gold griffin with black trim on a white or natural tabard can also be worn) or a black griffin on a white or natural background if a member of the Order of the Black Gryphon.
5. The bylaws, regulations, codes, and standards of the Household of Gryphon's Keep shall be the governing document of the organization. Fighter and safety rules established by the SCA shall be the guidelines by which martial activities occur.
6. Council of Nobles - The Council of Nobles will conduct the affairs of this organization, and shall consist of three officers. These offices shall be the Lord or Steward (President), Chancellor (Secretary), and Marshal (Fighter Marshal), and it shall be the responsibility of the Council to replace an officer due to resignation, incapacitation, or death.
7. The following offices are required in the Household of Gryphon's Keep to sustain it's existence (at least one member must be an active SCA member)-
a. The LORD (President) is the chief administrative officer of the Household of Gryphon's Keep, which includes coordinating with other officers as required for the smooth operation of the household and for its relations with outside agencies.
b. The CHANCELLOR (Secretary) keeps the minutes at meetings, and may be the editor of the web site if there is not a separate Web Minister. In the absence of the Lord, the Chancellor shall chair the monthly meeting.
c. The MARSHAL (Household Marshal) is responsible for overseeing the conduct of all martial arts activities, including but not limited to tournament lists, wars, combat archery, and period fencing, as well as such related activities as scouting and target archery. The Marshal bears primary responsibility for promoting both the safety and the authenticity of the martial arts in the household, but works with other officers in their areas of mutual interest.
8. Authority - the Lord shall be responsible for the daily management of the household during events or fighter practice. All members shall assist the Lord as required in planning events.
9. The Council of Nobles may appoint volunteers to the following posts as desired. Members of the Noble Council may hold these positions until a suitable candidate fills the post.
a. The EXCHEQUER (Treasurer) is responsible for maintaining the financial records of the HGK, supervising the finances of the HGK, and assembling the monthly financial reports and submitting them to the membership and Lord.
b. The MINISTER OF ARTS & SCIENCES is responsible for fostering the study and utilization of historically accurate art forms, as well as those aspects of period culture related to their use. He/She is also responsible for fostering the study of period technologies and philosophies, and their application to artifacts, both as used in the Society and as used in period.
c. The HERALD is responsible for supervising field heraldry and court heraldry at events within the HGK, and for assisting HGK members with the processing of submissions for names and armory.
d. The CHIRURGEON is responsible for voluntary first aid at Society events, including assisting participants in tournament combat, notifying attendees of health and safety concerns.
e. The HOSPITALLER greets and assisting newcomers. The Hospitaller handles loaner garb, equipment, and feast gear. He/She may also help to organize accommodations for out-of-town guests.
f. The HISTORIAN is responsible for keeping news clippings and other memorabilia that reflects the history of the HGK.
g. The RECRUITING OFFICER is responsible for building membership within the Household.
h. Other voluntary posts may be filled as required by the Council of Nobles (Minister of Children, etc.).
10. Membership - Membership is by invitation or sponsorship only.
a. A member may nominate an individual wishing to join the Household, or an interested party may contact a member who may sponsor the person. A prospective member must be an associate or active SCA member, undergo a one - two month initiation period, agree to abide by the bylaws, and swear the oath of fealty. At the end of this time frame, the prospective member must have minimum clothing (cap, tunic, hose, footwear), indicate his or her willingness to swear the oath of fealty, and be sworn into the household in an induction ceremony.
b. The Household of Gryphon's Keep highly encourages the pursuit of the Arts and Sciences for those not engaged in the martial arts.
11. Voting is limited to individuals who have sworn fealty to the Household of Gryphon's Keep, and who are active or associate members of the SCA. Any member of the household over the age of 18 may bring forth a motion for vote by the membership at any meeting whereby a quorum of members is present (2/3rds of the sworn members). A simple majority is required for motions to pass. Once the motion has passed, it requires the approval of the Council of Nobles.
12. Fealty - The Oath of Fealty to the Household of Gryphon's Keep is a solemn ceremony. After a member has indicated his or her willingness to comply with the Bylaws of the Household, he or she will be sworn by the Council of Nobles.
a. Oath of Fealty- During the induction ceremony, the Council of Nobles will conduct the oath of fealty as follows- Oath of Fealty -

I. I swear by the head and soul of our liege lord and this blade, to be obedient to his commands within the bounds of my persona.
II. To be faithful to my companions.
III. Never to desert my companions in any danger or otherwise, to the last breath.
IV. Never to fly from an equal number of opposers, but rather die courageously fighting on the place.
V. To be brave and just in battle, fight with honor, and defend the name and honor of Gryphon's Keep

13. Meetings - the Household of Gryphon's Keep shall hold business and general membership meetings on a monthly basis, at a time and place to be determined by the Lord. In the event that meetings cannot be held due to real world commitments or deployments, the meeting shall be conducted via e-mail.
a. Quorum - A quorum will consist of a minimum of three officers or fifty percent of the sworn membership in order to conduct routine organizational business.
14. Safety - In order to participate in martial activities, the given individual shall be a sustaining or an associate member in the SCA or sign an event specific release liability wavier.
b. All participants in martial activities must comply with all SCA and Kingdom safety and marshaling requirements to include, but not exclusive to Appendix B of the Corpora of the SCA, the Rules of the List of the SCA, the Marshal's Handbook, the Kingdom of Meridies Rapier Combat Rules and Marshalate Manual, and the Kingdom of Meridies's War Rules and Conventions.
15. Duration - The Household of Gryphon's Keep shall remain active until the organization has fewer than three members, or is dissolved for cause.
16. Amendments- All proposed amendments to these bylaws shall be made in writing and submitted to the Chronicler, who shall then distribute them to the sworn membership at the next meeting.
17. Household Rankings -
a. Man-at-arms - denotes the new member, he is beginning his study of martial combat.
b. Order of the Black Gryphon - has fought for 1 - 2 years and has proven himself in single combat - awarded by the Lord or Council of Nobles.
